From the heart of Vicenza, a tradition that continues
At the foot of the Palladian Basilica are some ancient warehouses dating back to the Middle Ages, later incorporated into Palladio's project in 1500. Historically reserved for the storage of foodstuffs, as the caves and cavities of the Vicenza area were typically used, these "stambugi" were used by traders of the historic market in the adjacent Piazza delle Erbe. In these spaces, until the end of the Second World War, one could savor the aroma of pickles, herring, and cod. Inside one of these "caves", between the steps leading down from Piazzetta Palladio and those of the Basilica's portico, the Ostaria il Grottino was founded in 1945. Initially, only Clinto, Fambuo, and Fragolino wines were served, before officially becoming a wine bar in 1957.
Our Wine Bar was established in 1999 in this ancient setting, carved entirely out of stone, with exposed brick walls, a wooden counter, and the vaults of the Palladian Basilica above your head. Our terrace, located in the center of Piazza delle Erbe, offers our customers a close-up view of the Basilica's façade. Whether you want to admire Palladio's most famous work from the outside or experience it directly from its foundations, Il Grottino offers an authentic, 360-degree experience. For 25 years, the history of the city and the region have met with the institution of the quintessential Venetian aperitif, always maintaining the atmosphere of a true Ostaria, authentic and informal. Listed among the Historic Shops of Vicenza, Il Grottino represents a piece of the city's living history, which we continue not only through our location but also with our products. A wide selection of local wines, endless spritzes, and traditional yet original Spunciotti have made Ostaria il Grottino a landmark in the heart of the city. We invite you to visit our Ostaria for an 'aperitivo' or a drink, to fully savor a truly incredible setting rich in the history of our beloved Vicenza.
